Welcome to the Online Port of Flotilla 87, your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla at Lake Anna VA, we appreciate you visiting our Website!

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer, civilian, non-military arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. It serves the general public through boating-safety classes, vessel safety checks, and safety patrols on the water and in the air. Founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves, it was re-designated the Auxiliary in 1941. Today, the 38,000 volunteer members (men and women) donate thousands of hours in support of Coast Guard missions, such as Search & Rescue, Public Education, Vessel Safety Checks, Marine Enviromental Protection and Maritime Domain Awareness.

We are always looking for new members to wear the Auxiliary uniform and share in our quest of proud traditions and worthy missions. Our backgrounds, interests and skills bring a wide variety of talent and services to the boating public. Additional information on joining the auxiliary is available here.

The Commander's Corner

Have you started to dust off the boat seats for the season? Are you digging out the dock lines and longing for fair weather and calm seas? Well, if you are joining us at Lake Anna for the first time or as a regular boater, you are headed to the best water in Virginia!

The members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 87 would like to welcome you to another boating season-one that, as always, promises to be fun and energizing. We would like to share a few pointers with you in order for all of us to enjoy the summer fun as safely as possible.

Have you taken a safe boating class? The laws in Virginia and across the nation are getting more strict for boats and jet skis, as we lose too many people to tragic, unnecessary boating accidents each year. But, you can do your part to help by becoming an educated boater. Flotilla 87 offers a safe boating class monthly during the boating season. Click here for more information.

Have you had your boat checked? Are your life jackets available (not in plastic) and in good repair? Do you have the appropriate size jacket for each person on the boat? Do you have a fire extinguisher? These are just a few of the important items that our vessel safety check examiners look for during our free vessel check. We don't write tickets, we just want to help you include all the appropriate safety equipment you need, in working order, on your boat. More here.

Each year, we add more boats to our lake. Courtesy gets passed on and can save a life. There are 2 important rules to remember: the 1/3 rule-always leave at least 1/3 of your gas amount to get to the nearest fuel dock; and the plus 1 rule-bring all your trash back to the dock plus 1 piece a careless boater left behind. By doing these things, we insure safety, and a clean environment for all of us to enjoy.

See you on the water!

Jane Haley, Flotilla 87 Vice Commander

Life Jackets Save Lives

Throughout the boating season remember to practice safe and responsible boating, always wear your life jacket, and be alert and aware while on the water. By practicing these simple steps you can save your life as well as the lives of the people boating with you. Life jackets are now more comfortable and lightweight than ever, with many new styles to fit the style you want. Safe boating saves lives so for this year’s National Safe Boating Week and throughout the boating season remember to Boat Smart. Boat Safe. WEAR IT!
