Our History
Flotilla 87 5SR (Lake Anna, VA) was chartered by the U.S. Coast Guard on June 19, 1993, and has been serving Lake Anna's boating public since then. The formation of Flotilla 87 was the result of efforts by many members of Flotilla 88, Lake Monticello, including William M. Flanders and John A. Shuttleworth. John E. Gorski was sworn in as the first Flotilla Commander, with Harold Ross, Jr. as the first Flotilla Vice Commander.
Charter Members were: Griswold Boxley, Robert L. Britt, Frances P. Chapman, John E Gorski, Thomas F. Grimes, Barbara Kerr, Elton C. Kerr, Christine L. Koch, Robert M. McHale, Donald M. Mosiman, Margaret Ann Mosiman, Paul Needham, Robert Rademacher, Harold Ross, Jr. Olivia H. Ryan, William T. Salisbury, William Spencer, Larry J. Wuebker.
Also on June 19, 1993, the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned the Lake Anna Search and Rescue Detachment. The station is located at the south end of the Lake Anna Dam on land made available by Virginia Power. Our current Lake Anna AUXSARDET (photograph above) became operational with Captain John Gentile, 5th District Operations Officer, cutting the ribbon to officially open and commerate the Lake Anna AUXSARDET June 17, 2004 .
The newly upgraded/renovated facility (provided by the US Coast Guard) allows the Auxiliary to expand its presence on Lake Anna to further promote boating and water safety. The rededication of Lake Anna Station was attended by Coast Guard Personnel from District 5, a representative for Congressman Cantor, Louisa County Supervisors, representatives of Dominion Power, representatives of local civic associations and members of the Auxiliary. Bob Rorick, Captain of the Blue Ridge Division 8 was the master of ceremonies. After the ceremonial flag raising, Captain Rorick welcomed comments from the Coast Guard officials and honored the hard work of the Auxiliary in completing the new Station. The Lake Monticello Flotilla 88 Chorus provided music for the occasion.
Our small but active volunteer group promotes safe boating on and around Lake Anna and protects the Lake's marine environment. We work closely with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, local law enforcement and rescue squads, the Lake Anna Civic Association (LACA), and the tri-county Lake Anna Advisory Commission (LAAC). Our activities include public education, safety patrols, and Vessel Safety Checks.
